Functional Skills Maths
Numbers, measures and data as they turn up in real life and real games: money, time, shapes, charts, and the arithmetic behind a game economy or a build budget. Entry 3 to Level 2, with Level 2 the GCSE grade 4 equivalent.
Refer a learner for mathsWhat each level covers
Three units at every level. Level 1 sits between the two columns with simpler subtopics.
| Unit | Entry Level 3 | Level 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Using numbers | Number basics, add and subtract, multiply, divide, rounding and estimating, decimal and fraction basics, number patterns | Place value, BIDMAS, fractions, decimals, percentages and converting between them, ratio, proportion, formulas, rounding and estimating |
| Measures, shape and space | Money, length, capacity, weight, time, temperature, scales, angles, symmetry and 2D shapes, 3D shape basics, movement and direction | Unit conversions, money problems and best buys, interest, speed, density, perimeter, area, circles, 3D shapes, volume, nets, surface area, plans and elevations, maps and scale drawings, coordinates, angles |
| Handling information and data | Lists, tables, tally charts, bar charts, line graphs | Mean, median, mode and range, comparing data sets, estimating the mean, probability and probability tables, scatter graphs |
The Level 2 exam
Online, invigilated, pass or fail. Sat at home or at a Player Ready hub.
30 min
Section A, non-calculator, 15 marks
90 min
Section B, calculator allowed, 45 marks
2 hours
60 marks in total, results in 2 to 6 working days
The pass mark is set per paper by the awarding body and moves with the paper's difficulty. Entry 3 and Level 1 papers follow the same applied style with shorter, simpler tasks. The mentor does not book the exam until the mocks say the learner is ready.
How we teach it
Every topic on the paper has a quest in a game the learner already plays.
Area, volume, surface area, nets
Build to spec in Minecraft: a 12 by 8 floor, a 500-block tank, a roof as a net. Count the blocks, then prove it with the formula. Blocks are unit cubes.
Fractions, decimals, percentages
Loot drop rates and crafting yields; armour durability as a percentage; a health bar as a fraction.
Ratio and proportion
Potion and crafting recipes scaled up; redstone timing; scaling a build 1:2.
Formulas and BIDMAS
Write the damage formula in a Roblox, Godot or Unity script, then evaluate it by hand.
Money, best buys, interest
Price a stall, budget a build, take a loan in a tycoon game and watch compound interest bite.
Mean, median, mode, probability
Match statistics, speedrun times, loot tables and enchantment odds, charted and compared.

Weekly mentored sessions of one to two hours follow the learner's plan. The learning platform supplies a video lesson, practice questions and a topic test for every topic above; the mentor decides the order and keeps the pace. Mock exams for the chosen awarding body run until the learner is reliably clearing the pass mark.
Our mentors teach with Minecraft Education lessons and the official Minecraft maths workbooks, and the same sessions can evidence AQA unit awards along the way.
